Researchers imaging bottled water in 2024 counted roughly 240,000 plastic fragments per litre, most of them nanoplastics small enough to cross into tissue, and an earlier estimate found people who drink mainly bottled water swallow around 90,000 more particles a year than tap drinkers.

- How bad is bottled water for microplastics, really?
- The 2024 PNAS imaging study found around 240,000 particles per litre in bottled water, roughly 90% of them nanoplastics. For comparison, the same methods find far lower counts in tap water, which is why a refillable bottle plus tap is the single biggest microplastic cut most people can make.
- Are stainless bottles better than plastic-lined aluminum?
- Yes. Aluminum bottles need an interior liner, historically an epoxy that can contain BPA or similar compounds. 18/8 stainless steel needs no liner at all: the water touches only steel.
- What about the plastic cap?
- Caps matter far less than the vessel because contact time with the water is brief and cold. If you want to go all the way, both bottle brands here sell steel-and-bamboo cap options.
- Is boiling tap water worth it?
- In hard water, yes: a 2024 study found boiling and then filtering removed up to about 90% of nano- and microplastics, because the particles co-precipitate with the limescale. A filter pitcher is the lower-effort everyday option.
