The best plastic-free laundry detergent

Powder in steel, strips in paper, wool in the dryer. The jug was never the point.

The laundry aisle is a wall of plastic jugs that are mostly water. Powder in a refillable steel tin and detergent strips in a paper sleeve wash just as well, ship lighter, and leave nothing to throw away. It is the easiest like-for-like swap in the house.

Laundry also has a second plastic problem: synthetic clothes shed microplastic fibres in the wash, a single load of acrylics can release hundreds of thousands of them. Lower temperatures, fuller loads and line drying all reduce shedding, which is where the drying rack earns its place.

Dry without the plastic, too

Wool dryer balls cut drying time and replace single-use dryer sheets, which are themselves polyester. A solid maple rack takes the shedding-heavy synthetics out of the dryer altogether.

Common questions

Do detergent strips clean as well as liquid?
For everyday loads, yes: they are the same surfactants dried into a dissolvable sheet. Heavily soiled loads sometimes want a second strip or a powder scoop, which is why we list both formats.
What are microplastics doing in my laundry?
Polyester, nylon and acrylic clothes shed plastic fibres mechanically in the wash. A landmark study measured up to about 700,000 fibres from a single 6kg acrylic load. Washing cooler, washing fuller and line drying all reduce it, and natural-fibre clothes do not shed plastic at all.
Are dryer sheets plastic?
Most are nonwoven polyester coated in softener, used once and binned. Wool dryer balls do the same softening job for about a thousand loads each.
Is powder or strips better?
Powder in steel is the cheapest per load and fully plastic-free including packaging. Strips win for tiny spaces, travel and anyone who wants zero measuring. Both beat the jug.
